Fundraise your way for MSA research

Fundraising is one of the most powerful ways our community can help National MSA Research raise awareness and support vital research into Multiple System Atrophy.

Whether you organise an event, take on a personal challenge, celebrate a special occasion, involve your workplace or simply bring people together for a good cause, every fundraiser can help move our mission forward.

You do not need to be an experienced fundraiser. Start with an idea, tell us what you would like to do, and we can help you work out the next steps.

Start your own fundraiser

Your fundraiser can be as simple or as ambitious as you want it to be.

You might organise:

  • a morning tea or community gathering
  • a trivia night
  • a barbecue or picnic
  • a workplace fundraiser
  • a sporting or fitness challenge
  • a school or club activity
  • a raffle or community event
  • a birthday or celebration fundraiser
  • an online fundraising campaign
  • a sponsored challenge
  • something completely different

If you have an idea that could help raise funds or awareness for MSA, we would love to hear about it.

Fundraise for a birthday or special occasion

A birthday, anniversary, wedding or other special occasion can be an opportunity to support a cause that matters to you.

Instead of gifts, you may choose to invite family and friends to make a donation to National MSA Research.

We can help you direct supporters to an appropriate fundraising or donation page and ensure funds raised are recorded correctly.

Fundraise in memory of someone special

Fundraising in memory of someone can be a meaningful way to honour their life while helping create hope for other people and families affected by MSA.

You may choose to:

  • create a memorial fundraiser
  • invite donations in lieu of flowers
  • organise an event in their memory
  • take part in a personal challenge
  • establish an ongoing fundraising initiative

Where appropriate, National MSA Research can record the person being remembered so donations and fundraising can be associated with their memorial campaign.

Workplace and corporate fundraising

Workplaces can make an important contribution to our mission.

Your workplace might choose to:

  • hold a fundraising event
  • organise a casual dress or awareness day
  • take part in a team challenge
  • support an employee-led fundraiser
  • provide matched giving
  • make a corporate donation
  • sponsor a National MSA Research event or initiative

We welcome conversations with organisations that want to support MSA research and awareness.

Fundraise through your workplace

Schools, sporting clubs, service organisations, social groups and community organisations can all help raise awareness of MSA.

Community fundraising can be a great way to bring people together while supporting an important cause.

We can work with organisers to help ensure fundraising activities appropriately represent National MSA Research and provide information about our mission.

Take on a challenge

Your fundraiser does not have to be a traditional event.

Set yourself a challenge and invite others to support you.

You could:

  • walk or run a particular distance
  • cycle
  • swim
  • take part in a marathon or fun run
  • complete a fitness challenge
  • give something up for a month
  • set a personal goal
  • create your own unique challenge

The most effective fundraiser is often one that means something personally to the person organising it.

Move4MSA

Move4MSA is a National MSA Research initiative encouraging people to move, raise awareness and fundraise in a way that works for them.

Participants may walk, run, ride, swim, take part in an organised sporting event or create their own movement challenge.

Move4MSA will continue to grow into a dedicated fundraising and awareness program for individuals and teams.

Organise a fundraising event

Community events can be a fantastic way to raise both funds and awareness.

If you are planning an event in support of National MSA Research, please contact us before promoting it as an official NMR fundraiser.

This allows us to:

  • understand what you are planning
  • ensure National MSA Research branding is used appropriately
  • help with donation and payment arrangements
  • provide relevant information about MSA and our organisation
  • determine whether permits, approvals or additional requirements may apply
  • ensure funds raised can be accurately recorded and acknowledged

Online fundraising

We are developing our own fundraising tools so supporters can create fundraising campaigns connected directly with National MSA Research.

Our future fundraising platform will allow supporters to create a campaign, set a goal, share their story and track progress.

Until that system is ready, please contact us and we can help determine the most appropriate way to set up your fundraiser.

Where does the money go?

Funds raised for National MSA Research support our charitable purpose and help us continue our mission to raise funds for research and increase public awareness of Multiple System Atrophy.

Depending on the fundraiser or campaign, funds may support:

  • MSA research and future research initiatives
  • awareness activities
  • patient, family and community resources
  • research collaboration and engagement
  • fundraising and community programs
  • the infrastructure required to deliver our charitable work

Where fundraising is established for a specific approved campaign or fund, we will clearly identify that purpose.

Fundraising goals and progress

Approved fundraising campaigns may be given a fundraising goal.

As our Administration Hub and fundraising platform are completed, campaign totals and progress displayed on the website will be updated from National MSA Research’s central financial records.

This will allow supporters to see accurate progress without separate totals being manually maintained across different systems.

Fundraising responsibly

Fundraising on behalf of a charity carries responsibilities.

Before representing an activity as an official National MSA Research fundraiser, organisers should register the fundraiser with us and receive any required approval.

Depending on the type and location of the fundraising activity, additional rules, permits or legal requirements may apply.

National MSA Research can provide guidance about our branding, donation collection and internal fundraising requirements, but organisers remain responsible for complying with any laws or requirements that apply to their activity.

Donations and receipts

Eligible donations made directly to National MSA Research may qualify for a tax-deductible receipt.

However, not every fundraising payment is necessarily a tax-deductible donation.

For example, purchasing tickets, raffle entries, merchandise or other goods or services may be treated differently because something is received in return.

National MSA Research will issue the appropriate receipt or payment record based on the type of transaction.

Fundraising resources

We are developing a Fundraising Toolkit to help supporters organise and promote fundraising activities.

Future resources may include:

  • fundraising planning guides
  • National MSA Research information
  • approved logos and branding
  • social media graphics
  • posters and flyers
  • donation QR codes
  • event checklists
  • fundraising tips
  • information about MSA
  • guidance for handling donations and proceeds

These resources will be made available through the appropriate National MSA Research platforms as they are developed.

Need help with an idea?

You do not need to have every detail worked out before contacting us.

Tell us what you are thinking about, who you would like to involve and what kind of fundraiser you are considering.

We can help determine the best way to connect your idea with National MSA Research.

Thank you for supporting our mission

Every fundraiser helps introduce more people to Multiple System Atrophy and strengthens our ability to support research and awareness.

Whether you raise $50, $500 or much more, your effort contributes to the same shared mission.

Combatting MSA together, until the world is free of MSA.
